Certified EV Charger Installation

Maher Electrical installs and commissions home and commercial EV charge points across Laois, Offaly, Kildare, Carlow and Kilkenny. Based in Mountmellick and run by Conn Maher, we are a registered electrical contractor with hands-on experience of the Zappi range and the wiring, protection and earthing that a safe charger installation demands.

Whether you drive a family EV, a work van or a fleet, we match the charger to your supply and daily mileage rather than guessing. We also integrate charging with solar PV and battery storage, so surplus generation from your own roof can go straight into the car, and we check that your fuse board can safely carry the extra load before anything is fitted.

Why Choose a Zappi Charger?

The Zappi is built for homes with solar, but it is a smart, dependable charger for any household with an electric vehicle.

Charge on Surplus Solar

The Zappi can detect when your panels are producing more than the house is using and divert that surplus straight into your car instead of exporting it to the grid.

📱

App Control & Scheduling

Monitor charging, set schedules and view energy history from the myenergi app. You can start a charge remotely, lock the charger and review each session.

Built-in Load Balancing

Dynamic load balancing constantly monitors the supply coming into your home and adjusts charging so your main fuse is never overloaded by the car and the house together.

🚗

Works With Any EV

Available tethered with a Type 2 cable or untethered with a socket, so it suits every electric vehicle on the road and is ready for your next one.

🏠

Indoor & Outdoor Installation

Weatherproof and robust, the Zappi can be fitted in a garage, on an external wall or on a freestanding post, with cable management to suit your parking spot.

📊

Ready for Smart Tariffs

Timer and boost modes let you charge during cheaper night-rate windows or when your solar is strongest, so every kilometre costs as little as possible.

Home & Commercial EV Charging

From a single home charger to multi-unit commercial installations, all wired, tested and certified.

🔌

7kW Home Chargers

A 7kW charger is the right choice for most Irish homes, adding a useful amount of range overnight. Typically 30 to 40 km of range for every hour of charging.

🏢

Commercial & Fleet Charging

Charge points for business premises, farms, depots and staff or visitor car parks, planned around how your vehicles actually operate each day.

Three-Phase Installations

Where a three-phase supply is available, we install and balance higher-capacity chargers to make the most of your connection.

🔧

Load Management

Multiple chargers or a limited supply are no problem. We design load management so your installation stays within capacity and remains safe at peak times.

🔨

Detached Garages & Long Cable Runs

Chargers at detached garages, outbuildings and remote parking spots, with correctly sized cable, protection and earthing for the distance involved.

🏗

New Build Pre-Wiring

Building or renovating? We can pre-wire and plan your EV charging before the walls are closed up, keeping the finished installation tidy and future-proof.

Adding a charger to an older installation? We may also recommend a fuse board upgrade with modern RCD/RCBO and surge protection to support it safely.

Solar, Battery & EV Charging

An EV charger works beautifully on its own, but it works hardest when it is part of a bigger picture. Maher Electrical installs solar PV, battery storage and EV charging as one integrated system, so the power your roof generates during the day can be stored in your battery or sent straight to your car.

A recent solar PV and Zappi project in Portlaoise shows exactly how this works in practice — 10x 455W panels, a 5kW inverter, a 5kWh battery and a Zappi 7kW charger, all monitored from the app. On a good day the homeowner charges his EV purely on solar power.

If you already have panels, we can add a charger and configure it to prioritise surplus solar. If you are starting from scratch, we will survey the whole property and design the system to fit together from day one.

Our Installation Process

A safe, certified installation with no surprises from start to finish.

1. Survey & Quote

We review your fuse board, supply capacity, earthing, cable route and parking position, agree the charger and mounting, and give you a clear written quote.

2. Installation & Testing

We fit the charger with the correct protection and cable, then test the circuit and the installation to current Irish standards and certify the work.

3. App Setup & Handover

We connect the charger to your Wi-Fi, set it up on the app, walk you through scheduling and solar modes, and make sure you are confident using it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about EV charger installation and grants.

Do you install Zappi chargers?

Yes. We are experienced Zappi installers and fit the myenergi range, most commonly the Zappi 7kW for homes. Every charger is mounted, wired, tested and certified, and we set it up on the app with you before we leave.

Can I get a grant for a home EV charger?

Grant support for home EV chargers has been available in Ireland, but the scheme, rates and rules change over time. We confirm the current position for your property at survey and quote stage and, where support is available, talk you through exactly what is required. Our EV charger grant guide explains the typical process.

What size EV charger do I need?

Most Irish homes are well served by a 7kW charger, which typically adds around 30 to 40 km of range for every hour of charging. If your home has a three-phase supply, a 22kW charger may be an option, subject to what your car's onboard charger can accept. We assess your supply, main fuse and usage during the survey and recommend the right fit.

Can you install a charger at a detached garage or on a new build?

Yes. Detached garages, outbuildings and long cable runs are common on Irish properties, and we install chargers safely with the correct cable sizing, protection and earthing. On new builds we can pre-wire and plan the installation before the finishes go in, which keeps the job neat and straightforward.

Do you install commercial EV chargers?

Yes. We install and commission commercial and fleet charge points for businesses, farms and visitor car parks, including load management for multiple units and three-phase installations. Talk to us about your site's supply capacity and how you expect the chargers to be used.

How long does an EV charger installation take?

A straightforward home installation usually takes a few hours. It can take longer where a long cable run, an earth electrode, a supply upgrade or a fuse board alteration is needed. We agree the plan and the likely duration with you before the day of installation.
